Coming Home to Memories: How Divya Preserved Her Family’s Stories With Remento
After discovering Remento through a webinar and researching the competition, Divya found a meaningful way to preserve her family’s memories and stay connected to home across distance and time.

For Divya, family history begins with people, not dates or facts. It lives in the memories her relatives carry, the stories behind old photographs, and the questions she wishes she had asked her grandmothers while she still could. With family members now living across different places and time zones, preserving those stories has become a way of staying close to the people and places that shaped her.
Finding Remento and Starting My Family Story
I found Remento through one of their webinars, then spent time researching the competition before deciding it was right for my family. I had already experienced the regret of not capturing my grandmothers' memories. I knew there were stories I would never get back, and I did not want to feel that same regret about the family members whose memories I could still hear.
“A lot of my family, they would prefer Remento because it takes the pain out of the process. Otherwise, it's going to be that project that you never get around to.”
I can send questions to my family members and wait for their answers in their own time. Sometimes I am asking about something I have heard before; other times, I am trying to understand a detail I have only seen in an old photo. Their answers become stories we can keep in the Remento books, while the original video or audio recordings let me, and the whole family, hold onto the way those family members told them.
Asking the Questions I Want to Remember
I love being able to ask personal questions myself. I'm a history nerd, so I am curious about the details behind old photos and the experiences that shaped my family. I want to know the stories that might otherwise stay tucked away in someone's memory simply because no one thought to ask.
“I'm really happy to have that option to post personal questions myself because I'm like a history nerd.”
I can also have other family members contribute questions, which gives us more ways to learn about family history. We can pair questions with photos, and I like that this lets me ask about the things I genuinely want to know, rather than trying to imagine what someone else might find important.

Hearing the Stories Brings Me Home
What stays with me most is hearing these memories from the people who actually experienced them. When a family member tells a story in their own voice, I hear more than the facts. I hear their tone, their laughter, the little pauses, and the personality that makes the memory belong to them.
“It's different to read about the memories, and it's different to hear it from people who have actually experienced it.”
The Remento books will give me, will give us, a way to return to those stories. I can read what my family members remember, and then I'll also have the original recording alongside it that can be viewed using the QR Codes in the book. I can move from one person's memories to another's, hearing different voices and seeing different ways of remembering the same family life. Years from now, those voices may be the part I treasure most.

Preserving Memories Across Distance
With my family in different places and time zones, I knew a traditional memoir project would be difficult to coordinate. We cannot always be available at the same time, and I did not want distance to become another reason a family story went untold. I wanted everyone to have the space to share when they could.
“Despite the time difference, Remento works. Everyone does it at their own time and their own schedule.”
I often think about my grandmothers and wish I had been able to preserve their memories this way. I cannot ask them those questions now, but I can ask the family members who are still here. I can learn the stories behind the photographs, hear the memories in the voices of the people who lived them, and keep adding to what our family will have to remember.
For me, that is what makes this meaningful. The past is gone, but the people who carry pieces of it are still here, and I want to listen while I still can.
